Microsoft announces major updates to its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines, incorporating Intel's latest Core Ultra 200V processors for improved AI capabilities, performance, and battery life. The new devices also feature Microsoft's Pluton security chip and will be available on February 18th.
Microsoft is making a strong push into the business PC market with its latest Surface updates, emphasizing AI capabilities and performance improvements. The news comes after a period where it appeared Microsoft might be scaling back its consumer PC efforts. However, the company quickly followed up with the introduction of the new Surface Laptop Studio, marking the launch of its AI PC initiative.
Now, Microsoft is enhancing its Surface family of business-oriented devices by integrating Intel's latest Core Ultra 200V processors. For those eagerly anticipating a cellular-enabled Surface Laptop, Microsoft also announced it will release a 5G model later this year. The most significant change brought by Intel's new Core Ultra chips is their larger 48 TOPS NPU, enabling them to handle more intricate AI tasks compared to their predecessors which had significantly smaller 10 TOPS NPUs. This upgrade is particularly impactful for advanced AI features such as Windows Recall, which demands at least a 40 TOPS NPU (the minimum requirement for all Copilot+ systems).Aside from enhanced AI performance, the Intel Core Ultra 200V chips in the Surface Laptop 7 are projected to deliver a 26 percent boost in multitasking speed compared to the Laptop 5, along with double the graphics performance and three times better battery life. While performance metrics for the new Surface Pro haven't been disclosed, Microsoft asserts it offers double the battery life during Teams calls compared to the Surface Pro 9. Like other Copilot+ systems, both the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop incorporate Microsoft's Pluton chip for enhanced security. The company also revealed that Pluton hardware will receive an update with a Key Storage Provider (KSP) feature later this year. This feature is designed to 'allow for more secure storage and management of cryptographic keys,' according to Microsoft.Complementing these new devices, Microsoft is introducing a new $200 Surface USB 4 Dock featuring two USB-C connections, USB-A, Ethernet, and HDMI. It also supports fast charging for both the new systems — a feature expected at that price point. The new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, powered by Intel's Core Ultra 200V processors, will be available for purchase starting on February 18th, with prices beginning at $1,500. For users prioritizing battery life, Qualcomm Snapdragon variants will also be offered (though be prepared for the potential drawbacks of slower emulated apps and compatibility issues with software and drivers)
