As reported by AP News, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed in an email to employees that the layoffs represent “less than 5 per cent” of the company’s total employee base. Some notifications are happening today with a regulatory filing by the company on Wednesday clarifying that the layoffs were a response to the “macroeconomic conditions and changing customer priorities.”
Nadella confirmed that while Microsoft is eliminating roles in some areas, it will continue to hire in “key strategic areas”. The email to employees also emphasised the importance of building a “new computer platform” using AI. Besides the layoffs, Microsoft is also making changes to its hardware portfolio and consolidating its leased office locations.
