Hundreds of flowers overflow from the base of the Spartan Statue as campus opens back up for the first day of classes on Monday, Feb. 20, 2023 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. on its campus does not give a full picture of the improvements the university needs to make.
SRM consultants interviewed law enforcement, first responders, staff and faculty, finding that on the night of the shooting the university law enforcement's response was "appropriate, timely, and correct." Nathan Taylor, a junior at MSU, said he'd give the university a "neutral to good" grade on the response.Students said they believed the university did the best it could under the circumstances in many areas, but that it had largely failed in specifically guiding instructors and professors in how to deal with trauma – either the students' or their own.
I had a teacher – I'm not gonna say who – but I had a teacher who was crying in class," Taylor recalled. "And I don't blame them, because it was rough, and they didn't really give them much guidance." Locke said she felt that MSU was pushing a message to students that "our healing was over," a message she felt was "a very harmful kind of ideology for the university to hold."
