On February 13, Michigan State University became the latest in the long list of American schools terrorized by a mass shooting. Now, students are expected to return to class just one week after a tumultuous night in fear of their lives.

I’ll die in a car crash than experience something like this – but I’ve always been worried that something like this would happen and it did,” she said. “I’m not surprised this happened. I could ask why but at this point nothing changes.”“It makes it really hard to imagine we will grow old.”

Natalie Tobey, 18, wasn’t surprised either. In high school, there were multiple false shooting scares and, like for many people of her generation, being at the sight of a mass shooting seemed more an inevitability than a possibility. Natalie was studying in her dorm room when her roommate texted her about what was happening. The dorm building’s Resident Assistants instructed the freshmen to lock their doors. Natalie did and turned off her TV and lights.

repeated what they’d heard on the police scanner: that there were possibly multiple shooters or even bombs planted around campus . “I sat in the dark texting my friends and family that I loved them,” Natalie said. "All you heard was sirens and helicopters.” That night, after the suspect was found dead and campus was reopened, Natalie left campus with a friend, whose father picked them up to drive them to their hometown.
