Michigan State AD J Batt Leaving for Kentucky After Brief Tenure

Michigan State Athletic Director J Batt is finalizing a deal to become Kentucky's next AD, leaving East Lansing after just over a year. His departure follows President Kevin Guskiewicz's move to Clemson, creating uncertainty for the Spartans' athletic program, especially new football coach Tommy Fitzgerald. Batt secured a historic $401 million donation from Acrisure CEO Greg Williams before leaving.

Michigan State University Athletic Director J Batt is finalizing a deal with the University of Kentucky to become the Wildcats' next athletic director , sources at Kentucky have confirmed exclusively to Spartan Nation.

Batt, who has been in East Lansing for just over a year, will depart following the announcement that university president Kevin Guskiewicz is leaving for Clemson University. An official announcement is expected within the next 72 hours, barring unforeseen developments. Batt's tenure at Michigan State was brief but eventful. He was hired to bolster fundraising and inject more revenue into the athletic department.

A major milestone came in December 2025 when Acrisure CEO Greg Williams and his wife Dawn made a $401 million donation and investment to the university. The bulk of that funding is allocated to the 'For Sparta' campaign, which aims to raise $1 billion for renovations to Spartan Stadium, the Breslin Center, and other athletic facilities. Another portion will support Spartan Ventures, a university-affiliated corporation designed to maximize NIL opportunities for student-athletes.

Batt's departure comes at a critical juncture for Michigan State, particularly for the football program under new head coach Tommy Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald now finds himself without a permanent president or athletic director to report to, and he has not yet coached a game for the Spartans. The instability at the top of the university could complicate the search for both a new president and athletic director. Michigan State has not even named an interim president following Guskiewicz's announcement.

Previous interim president Teresa Woodruff served for 16 months before Guskiewicz took over. The lack of permanent leadership may deter top candidates from considering positions at the university. During the transition, it remains unclear who will serve as interim athletic director. Previously, after the firing of Alan Haller, Deputy AD Jennifer Smith served as co-interim AD.

The university has not announced its plans for an interim replacement. Meanwhile, Batt's move to Kentucky is facilitated by a clause in his contract triggered by Guskiewicz's departure. Michigan State paid $2 million to buy out Batt's previous contract with Georgia Tech, and Kentucky is expected to pay a similar buyout to Michigan State. The deal underscores the fluid and often volatile nature of athletic director appointments at major programs.

Batt leaves behind a legacy of significant fundraising achievement but also a sense of unfinished business as the Spartans continue to navigate a period of transition. His brief stay in East Lansing will be remembered for the historic $401 million gift, but his exit adds to the uncertainty surrounding the athletic department and the university as a whole
