In a heated debate, Democratic Senate candidates Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens clashed over corporate influence and electability in Michigan's high-stakes race to challenge Mike Rogers. The confrontation underscores the pArty's internal strategic debate.
The Democratic primary in Michigan's Senate race intensified during a Tuesday night debate, highlighting the ongoing rift between the party's progressive faction and its establishment wing.
Former Wayne County Health Director Abdul El-Sayed and Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI) clashed sharply over corporate influence and electability, following state Senator Mallory McMorrows withdrawal from the contest. The race now consolidates into a two-person contest to challenge former Republican Representative Mike Rogers, who is favored to pick his own replacement.
While the candidates debated a range of issues including inflation,immigration, artificial intelligence, Social Security, childcare, and foreign policy, the core of the evening revolved around a fundamental strategic question for Democrats: whether to adopt an anti-establishment message focused on purging corporate money from politics or to camPaign primarily on legislative accomplishments and opposition to President Donald Trump. El-Sayed repeatedly accused Stevens of being "bought off" by corporate interests, framing her as a candidate reliant on outside spending and special interests.
He specifically criticized a trip to Portugal that Stevens took with her mother, which was funded by Center Forward,a super PAC that has sprint millions of dollars in ads supporting her campaign.
"We also don't need politicians bought off by corporations in this race," El-Sayed stated. "Our politics have been deeply and profoundly corrupted by corporate money and I want to get money out. ... there's a group called Center Forward that happened to pay for a flight for the congresswoman and her mother to Portugal. I wish to understand what she promised them in return.
" These attacks mirrored themes championed by other candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America and the party's left wing, as El-Sayed promoted Medicare for All, taxing billionaires, free child care, and the elimination of corporate political spending as central priorities. Stevens countered by arguing that Republicans themselves are attempting to boost El-Sayed in the primary because they perceive him as a weaker general election opponent against Rogers.
"The GOP is spending thousands of dollars to prop up your campaign as they believe they will make it easier for Mike Rogers to win if you are the nominee," she said. "I do not plan to make anything easier for Republicans or Mike Rogers. " She emphasized her record of flipping a Republican-held House seat in 2018 and her continued success in competitive districts, positioning herself as the most electable candidate to retain the Senate seat for Democrats.
Stevens also defended her independence, stating, "No one owns my vote, and no one owns my policies," and she pivoted to a broader establishment Democratic message: that the top priority must be stopping Trump and defeating Republicans. Rather than engaging deeply on ideological differences, she frequently redirected the conversation to Trump's policies on tariffs, immigration, Social Security, and the economy,presenting herself as a proven lawmaker ready to deliver results.
