Schools in Michigan are preparing for what could be a government shutdown starting this time next week.

Schools in Michigan are preparing for what could be a government shutdown starting this time next week. With legislators still finishing the budget for the fiscal year, district leaders said some students could lose key services.

But state offices can't release the money for categorical items until they know how much is in the budget for each district to pull from. In other words, we pay for extra transportation. We pay for free and reduced to lunch payments. We pay, we pay, you know, so there's a lot we pay for some special cost we pay. So maybe we get a base payment, but all those categorical are frozen for a longer period of time," said Eric Hoppstock, Berrien RESA superintendent. But a delayed check could mean less class time for students who need extra help. "Now, what I don't know is things like you speak English as a second language, and you've been involved in a classroom. Do I have to suspend some of that programming because I'll no longer have funds coming in to pay for that," said Hoppstock. For some teachers looking into extracurricular activities supported by Title II and Title IV funding, the application process is delayed. I'm having to tell teachers who've taken students on leadership activities or who've provided STEM activities. No, we can't do that yet. Hopefully, we can do that when the grant becomes available and we get approval, which hopefully will be by the end of the school year," said Amanda Lexotte, Brandywine Instructions assistant superintendent. When the budget is set, there's still the issue of government offices getting back to work to send the money on time. And then you come back, you've got to you have seven to ten days of catch up work just to get back to zero. And then you got to do all that work that you're now woefully behind in. And so it's a two-to-three-month delay. And it's like for seven days," said Hoppstock. According to Berrien RESA's Superintendent, Berrien County is set to keep schools open through December regardless of the shutdown..Stay Connected
