With both Ohio State and Michigan undefeated and ranked in the top three this season, one of the fiercest rivalry games in the sport comes with added stakes
Jim Harbaugh has beaten Michigan State. He’s won a Big Ten championship and made the College Football Playoff. He even beat Ohio State for the first time ever last November. But there’s one crucial win that the former Wolverines quarterback has yet to register as Michigan coach: beating Ohio State in Ohio Stadium.
The stakes are sky high this year. The winner will advance to the Big Ten Championship and get an inside track to the College Football Playoff. The loser could still end up playing in the playoff, depending on how top teams in other conferences fare, but the odds are much slimmer. “The fans know the route that the [team] buses take…and they see that first bus coming and it’s bingo,” Martin said. “They line up to give us a one-fingered salute all the way down there.” Martin added that he once had the misfortune of watching an unassuming Ohio State fan turn around and deliver a highly personal welcome to the Wolverines. “We had an 80-plus-year-old woman moon us,” he said.
“That was, to me, the low light. There was no need for it,” said Martin, who was present for the incident. He added that Michigan had received no advanced warning of the heightened security measures. The conference subsequently learned that Ohio State had not required any other visiting teams to undergo searches and, following the game, issued a stern memo to members warning against doing anything of the sort ever again.
