The Michigan Republican Party approved a proposal on Saturday to change the state’s presidential primary process in a way that some believe will benefit former President Donald Trump.
The Republican National Committee would have to approve the plan in order for it to move forward, and Michigan’s Republican Party chair told ABC News the organization participated on some level in developing the plan."We worked with the entire RNC team, RNC legal, so this was not some cockamamie plan that we just came up with on our own," GOP state party chairwoman Kristina Karamo said to ABC.
Karamo said she discussed proposal matters directly with Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee. An RNC official told the Washington Examiner that beyond guidance about the rules and processes Karamo's plans, the committee was not involved in consulting on the substance of any changes. As Michigan has until Oct. 1 to inform the RNC about its proposed changes, the official emphasized that no changes should be considered official until the broader committee reviews and approves each state's delegate selection plan.
Laffey said because of the former president's popularity with party officials in the state, and the nature of the most committed voters to participate in caucuses, using the later contests to determine who wins the bulk of the delegates is a"blatant move to try and prevent the will of the people."
