Despite its win over Ohio State, Michigan fires Kirk Campbell after one season as offensive coordinator in which the Wolverines finished the regular season 128th in total offense.

"After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction," Michigan coach Sherrone Moore."This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors.

Campbell’s firing comes after a regular season in which the Wolverines ranked 128th out of 134 FBS teams with only 294.3 yards of total offense per game. Their passing offense was particularly putrid, ranking 130th nationally with only 133.6 passing yards per game as they changed starting quarterbacks from Davis Warren to Alex Orji to Jack Tuttle back to Warren over the course of the season.

While the Wolverines defeated Ohio State on Saturday, it wasn’t due to any great effort by their offense as they gained just 234 yards on 4.03 yards per play with only 62 passing yards. Their only touchdown came on a two-yard drive after Aamir Hall intercepted Will Howard, but they stillas Ohio State’s offense also scored just one touchdown while gaining only 252 yards.

Campbell spent three years on Michigan’s staff but was its offensive coordinator for only one year. He joined the staff in 2022 as an offensive analyst, then was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2023. He took over as offensive coordinator this year after Moore replaced Jim Harbaugh as head coach. Tight ends coach Steve Casula, who was the offensive coordinator at UMass in 2022 and 2023, will serve as Michigan’s interim offensive coordinator for its bowl game.
