Instead, the automated sail system inflates when conditions are right for sailing, and deflates as soon as the engine has to go back to full capacity.The sails inflate thanks to an air compressor and a telescopic mast that rises as the sails fill with air. The sails can easily retract to allow the ship to pass under a bridge, for example, and the automated system also adjusts the sails accordingly to the wind, meaning a sailing crew is not required.
The firm's new project forms part of a wider initiative aimed at curbing the shipping industry's carbon emissions — according to, the sector is responsible for 940 million tonnes of CO2 annually and approximately 2.5 percent of global greenhouse emissions.
