Padres' Michael Wacha gives up career-high eight extra-base hits, Eric Lauer stifles team that traded him to Brewers

But the offense can’t afford to wait around for Tatis.

The Brewers pounced on Wacha from the start, their four extra-base hits in the first — a first for the 31-year-old veteran — both well-placed and scorched. By then, pitching coach Ruben Niebla had already visited and Nabil Crismatt was warming in a hurry in quite the scene shift. At least there was a moral victory that should save the bullpen a bit: Crismatt did not have to enter the game until the fifth, after Rowdy Tellez’s 104 mph homer to right and Brian Anderson’s double off Trent Grisham’s glove in center finally prompted Melvin to pull Wacha against the backdrop of mild booing.

Traded with Luis Urias to the Brewers in the deal that netted Trent Grisham and Zach Davies before the 2020 season, Lauer had allowed two earned runs over his first two starts against his former team, evening homering off old friend Chris Paddack in 2021.
