There is one thing everyone seemed to agree on — California should be able to build more affordable housing by applying the density-bonus law on the coast without compromising coastal protections.The dispute along the coast is the latest chapter in a years-long battle over housing development across the state.

“We cannot and will not build our way to housing affordability in California,” Democratic Sen. Steve Padilla of Chula Vista, a member of the natural resources committee, said at the meeting Tuesday. A report by Circulate San Diego, a nonprofit promoting more housing and use of public transportation, was harsh in itsSome Coastal Commission members pointed out that Circulate San Diego is funded, in part, by developers. Senate natural resources committee member John Laird, D-Santa Cruz, called the report a “hatchet job.”
