The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, 'Michael,' will undergo significant reshoots due to a legal complication stemming from the 1993 settlement with the Chandler family. The film's narrative, focusing on Jackson's innocence, faces challenges due to the settlement's restrictions on dramatizing the case.
A source close to the film revealed to TMZ that the project is not in jeopardy and will undergo reshoots in March. The source declined to comment on whether the reshoots are directly related to removing scenes involving the Chandler case. However, the news comes after the scheduled April release date for the film was pushed back to November 2025 due to the need to rewrite a significant portion of the script concerning Chandler.
The delay stems from a crucial oversight regarding the details of Jackson's $23 million settlement with the Chandler family back in 1993. The film, titled 'Michael,' reportedly begins and ends with the then-13-year-old Jordy Chandler's accusation that Jackson molested him, aiming to portray Jackson as completely innocent. However, the real-life settlement prohibits Jackson and/or his team from any dramatization of Jordy and his family. This crucial detail was not revealed to the producers of 'Michael' until last fall, after director Antoine Fuqua and his team had already completed filming. This oversight reportedly necessitates the scrapping of several key scenes, a complete overhaul of the script, and the return of the cast for reshoots. Ironically, the 'Michael' script reportedly includes scenes of Jackson and his lawyers discussing the eventual settlement with the Chandler family, further highlighting the complexity and sensitivity surrounding this case.
