Michael Keaton’s Batsuits combined with The Flash’s VFX problems show why practical superhero suits will always age better than CG costumes.
Michael Keaton’s practical Batsuits only made The Flash’s CG costume problem worse. While a movie centered on Barry Allen and the multiverse was expected to lean heavily into CGI, The Flash’s visual effects often played against the film. This includes the divisive Flash CG cameos, the visuals of the speed force, the portrayal of Barry’s powers, and the CG costumes combined with CG doubles that were used quite a lot during action scenes.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Characters like Supergirl and Flash looked better in promotional pictures or behind-the-scenes images compared to how their suits looked on screen most of the time. This has to do with the fact that, for most of the action sequences, their costumes were being replaced by CG ones. In fact, Supergirl and the Flash were often replaced by CG doubles entire, which is when the character is a CG model.
Keaton's Batsuits Avoided The Flash Complaints In theory, Michael Keaton’s Batsuit in The Flash, which is based on what the character wore in Batman and Batman Returns, should look worse than the Flash and Supergirl costumes. Keaton’s Batsuit design traces back to 1988, when Batman was filmed, whereas Flash and Supergirl would get brand new suits designed to fit in a modern shared universe of superheroes. However, the result was the exact opposite.
There was no CG portion of Keaton’s Batsuit, except for when the entire character had to be replaced by a CG double. Most of Keaton’s Batman scenes in The Flash were relatively grounded compared to those involving Flash and Supergirl. As a result, a practical suit combined with stunt performers was enough to bring Batman to life, whereas the Flash and Supergirl’s scenes were very CG-heavy.
The Flash's Costume Complaints Show Simpler Hero Outfits Work Better The fact that Keaton’s Batsuit avoided The Flash’s CG costume complaints is a reminder that simpler, practical superhero suits generally work better. Part of the reason why films like Batman have aged so well is that a practical costume will always look good on a screen, whereas a CG costume like Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern is forever tied to that era's technology.
