BACK TO THE FUTURE, from left: Christopher Lloyd, Michael J. Fox, 1985
There are some franchises that fans never really stop hoping will come back in a big way, and Back to the Future is near the top of that list. Even after decades of people asking for another sequel, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale have made it pretty clear that Back to the Future 4 is not happening.
But that does not mean the franchise has been sitting still. More than 40 years after the original movie first hit theaters, a new Back to the Future project featuring Michael J. Fox is now arriving. This time it is all about the stage version that somehow turned one of the most beloved movies of the 1980s into a major musical hit. A new feature-length documentary titled A Future on Stage is now being released on Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube, and other digital platforms beginning today. The film, directed by Brian Stillman, goes behind the scenes of Back to the Future: The Musical, which first premiered in London’s West End before transferring to Broadway and later launching a national U.S. tour. The documentary includes interviews with Fox, Zemeckis, Gale, Roger Bart, and several of the performers and creatives who helped bring the production to life. For Gale, the documentary sounds like a chance to show just how difficult this whole thing really was. He said, “Having Back to the Future the Musical playing to sold-out houses around the world is a future I never could have predicted. I thought getting the movie off the ground was insanely difficult, but getting the musical version on stage was even harder, and this documentary really captures what we all went through.” That quote pretty much says it all. The idea of turning Back to the Future into a musical probably sounded a little absurd at first, especially with how tightly fans hold onto the original 1985 movie. But the stage show ended up becoming a real success. It won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in the West End, and after moving to Broadway, it also picked up Tony Award nominations, including one for Roger Bart’s performance as Doc Brown. Who Stars In 'Back to the Future'? The documentary also features Broadway cast members Casey Likes, Liana Hunt, Jelani Remy, Nathaniel Hackmann, Mikaela Secada, and Merritt David Janes, along with key creatives like director John Rando, producer Colin Ingram, and production designer Tim Hatley. Likes played Marty McFly on Broadway, and the trailer teases Fox speaking warmly about how impressed he was by the actor’s performance. The cast of the original film, of course, remains a huge part of why Back to the Future still matters this much. Fox famously starred as Marty McFly opposite Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, with Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson rounding out the core ensemble.
