Actor, author, and advocate Michael J. Fox received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on January 4th. President Biden presented the award at a White House ceremony, recognizing Fox's efforts in Parkinson's disease research through The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF).
The Medal of Freedom honors individuals who have made 'exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.' Fox was introduced as 'one of the most beloved actors of our time' and praised for his 'remarkable wit and charm', iconic characters, and 'undaunted resilience and optimism' in advocating for those with Parkinson's disease. The White House press release also acknowledged Fox's numerous awards, including five Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award. Fox expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating that he shares it with 'the patients, families and researchers who have brought us closer than ever to ending Parkinson's disease once and for all.
