Michael Conforto blasted a two-run homer to break a tie in the eighth inning and lead the Giants to a 3-1 win over the Royals

SAN FRANCISCO — A single would have sufficed, but Michael Conforto went deep anyways.

In the biggest moment of his young Giants career, Conforto blasted a two-run homer to break a tie in the eighth inning and lead his team to a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon at Oracle Park. Conforto got a hanging breaking ball over the center of the plate from Royals lefty Ryan Yarbrough and cranked it 429 feet over the right-field wall.

Signed to a two-year, $36-million deal this offseason and asked to hit in the middle of the Giants order, Conforto hasn’t disappointed. His home run Sunday was his third of the year to go with 6 RBIs through his first nine games. The Giants trailed the entire game until the eighth, when speedy outfielder Bryce Johnson got on board with a single, then scored all the way from first base on a liner down the third-base line, sliding into home just under the tag for the game-tying run.Tyler Rogers handled a scoreless ninth as the Giants avoided a three-game sweep to the Royals and moved to 4-5 on the year.
