“We have no idea how expansive this investigation is going to ultimately reveal itself because Rudy’s an idiot,” said Cohen, who was also the subject of a federal raid.
Michael Cohen—ex-President Trump’s former attorney who was convicted of campaign finance violations—said on CNN Thursday he believes the raid of fellow Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s New York City apartment by investigators looking into his Ukraine dealings will end up expanding the probe, saying Giuliani is “an idiot” and has been “shady for a long time.
” Key Facts Cohen, who was himself the subject of a federal raid and was ultimately convicted of campaign finance violations while working as Trump’s personal attorney, railed against Giuliani during a Thursday interview with CNN. “He’s been involved in some very, very shady stuff,” Cohen said, citing the former New York City mayor’s “relationships with foreign countries” while serving as Trump’s personal attorney. Referencing his own experience when federal investigators raided his home three years ago, Cohen said he expects the search will turn up new evidence that will expand the probe as “who knows what Rudy was involved in?” Cohen also said he expects Giuliani would turn on Trump in a “a heartbeat” if investigators are willing to cut a deal. “We have no idea how expansive this investigation is going to ultimately reveal itself because Rudy’s an idiot, and that’s the problem,” Cohen said. “Rudy behaves in such an erratic manner that who knows what’s on those telephones or what’s on those computers?” Giuliani’s New York apartment on Wednesday morning, seizing his electronic devices as part of a probe into whether he acted on behalf of Ukranian oligarchs to illegally lobby the Trump administration as he tried to dig up dirt on President Biden. Giuliani has not been charged and has denied any wrongdoing. However, if Giuliani was working to aid Ukranian officials and did not disclose it to the Department of Justice, he would have committed a crime by violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The FBI raided Cohen’s hotel room, home and office in April 2018. He was then sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to nine charges, including bank fraud, tax fraud and campaign finance violations, later that year. The former attorney was released from jail less than a year after his sentencing and has been on house arrest since July 2020.
