NEW: Michael Avenatti faces charges in NYC, L.A., accused of trying to extort Nike
Michael Avenatti was charged with wire and bank fraud by federal authorities, CNBC reported on Monday, citing federal authorities.Authorities will be speaking about the charges in Los Angeles later on Monday, the report said.
The announcement of Avenatti's arrest followed shortly after the lawyer, who drew national attention for representing adult film star Stormy Daniels, posted on Twitter that he would be holding a press conference on Tuesday. "Tmrw at 11 am ET, we will be holding a press conference to disclose a major high school/college basketball scandal perpetrated by @Nike that we have uncovered. This criminal conduct reaches the highest levels of Nike and involves some of the biggest names in college basketball," he tweeted at 12:16p.m. ET.
Less than an hour later, reporters from Reuters and CBS News had tweeted about the charges filed against Avenatti. Attorney Michael Avenatti arrives at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse for R.
