Miami guard Christian Watson takes a shot with his teammates cheering him on in the background during a practice ahead of the NCAA Tournament national semifinals on Friday, March 31, 2023, in Houston.“So, what we did was we laid down a foundation, just like we’ve done at Miami. We have followed the same blueprint, the same map, to take us from day one to where we are today.”
After reaching the Elite Eight last season and losing to eventual national champion Kansas, Miami won the ACC and had arguably the toughest road, beating Houston by 14 and erasing a 13-point second-half deficit against Texas. Once again, just like George Mason’s run, Larrañaga will face UConn, only this time with higher stakes in Saturday’s second national semifinal game at NRG Stadium.
“I might be 73 years old, but I think age is just a number,” Larrañaga said. “I just love what I’m doing. I love coaching basketball. I’ve done it for 51 years. And I hope to do it a lot longer. And what it so enjoyable are the players. I tell the players all the time, the court is my classroom. And you are my student. And I’m going to teach you as much as I can. And learn as much as you can, improve as much as you can because all these guys want to play beyond college.
