Mexican President López Obrador has been invited by the Trump administration to visit Washington next week to celebrate the implementation of the new North America trade pact

López Obrador’s planned trip poses a risk for both leaders, who have not embraced wearing face masks and recently have resumed traveling across their respective countries for events. But it wouldn't be Trump's first sit-down with a foreign leader during the pandemic: Last week he met with President Andrzej Duda of Poland in the Oval Office.

Still, there's growing concern in Mexico that López Obrador could have been exposed to the coronavirus after Finance Minister Arturo Herrera announced last week that he had tested positive, just days after they had met in person. López Obrador has never been tested for the coronavirus, Mexican health authorities said on Sunday.

The Mexican leader has also said he will fly commercial to Washington, raising further health concerns. Ebrard said more details would be shared early Wednesday, which marks the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s taking effect. A White House spokesperson declined to comment on Tuesday. Officials across the U.S., Mexico and Canada have been vocal in celebrating — and expressing relief — that the deal is taking effect after more than two years of tense negotiations and, now, uncertainty amid the pandemic.
