Mexico manager Benji Gil drew criticism for comments he made about Team USA following the team’s loss in the WBC.
Mexico held strong early until Aaron Judge launched a two-run home run, followed by a three-run blast from Roman Anthony in the same inning to push the U.S. ahead 5-0 after three frames. The United States did not score again the rest of the game, while Mexico chipped away behind Jarren Duran to plate three runs.
Mexico entered the eighth and ninth innings with a chance to rally and even put the tying run on base, but failed to convert, ultimately falling 5-3. Following the matchup, Mexico manager Benji Gil made it clear that not only does he want to face the U.S. again — which would likely have to come in the championship — but he also believes his team would win the rematch. “I hope we play the U.S. again. That would be awesome. I would be ecstatic to face them again,” Gil said. “It’s probably the championship, right? You know what? I want to face them more than I want anything else in the world. “I think we’ll end up 1-1 against the U.S. this tournament, and Mexico won’t lose again until three years from now.”“You gotta think about Team Italy first, brother — they’re still undefeated and could leave you out with a win,” one fan said. Someone else added, “Sounds like a sore loser. Does he know the Pool B runner-up would have to go through Team Japanin the semis ?”Both Team Mexico and Team USA will be back in action over the next two nights, marking the end of pool play as each team takes on Team Italy, which currently sits at 2-0. The U.S. will face Italy at 9 p.m. EST on Tuesday night, while Mexico will meet them on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. EST.
