Javier Aguirre, Mexico's national football coach, admits the team lacks a clear playing style and a consistent core of players with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. He is seeking to find a system and 23 players capable of making a strong showing in the tournament.
With a year and a half to go until the World Cup, Mexico lacks a playing system and a base of players, admitted coach Javier Aguirre. 'Vasco' Aguirre, in his third stint at the helm of the national team, has managed just six games, only two officially for the Nations League against Honduras at the end of last year. 'The selection lacks its own style, its own system of play and a base team,' Aguirre said in an interview with TUDN. 'This worries me because every day the World Cup is closer.
We have to find 23 players and a style of play that allows us to have a World Cup that is more than worthy.' The 66-year-old coach replaced Jaime Lozano, who was sacked after the first-round elimination at the Copa América. In his first four games, he tried out players and formations and against Honduras he used two different tactical setups in each match. 'In Toluca we played with two strikers and we changed with a pivot, but we still haven't played with a line of five, for example,' said the former Atlético de Madrid coach. Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup, sharing the organization with the United States and Canada. Aguirre said that to seek better cohesion and to be able to choose better, he asked the team owners for permission to play more friendly matches, especially outside of the United States, where by contract, Mexicans play almost all their unofficial games. The first trial of this type will be in two weeks when the Tri faces Inter de Porto Alegre in Brazil. It is expected that a match against River Plate in Argentina will also be confirmed, but it has not yet been officially announced. '(In those matches) anything is important except the result. I want to see young players in Brazil, that they go to the Monumental and suffer, that they demand it from them to get them out of their comfort zone,' added the coach. 'I want to see their cards to play with the best in the World Cup.' Besides looking for new faces, Aguirre said he hopes to recover striker Hirving Lozano, who missed the Copa América and has not been called up in the last six games. Lozano recently left PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands and signed with San Diego FC, which will debut in the MLS next season. 'I want to recover 'Chucky', who was out due to injury, but now he is going to San Diego,' said Aguirre. 'He will be closer and we already talked about it that I will have more opportunity to visit him and see him. He is already playing more and I am happy because he is a recoverable player.
