Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum vehemently rejects US accusations of ties to drug cartels and pledges retaliation against Trump’s tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum vehemently rejected accusations from the United States on Saturday, claiming that her government has ties to drug cartels . She pledged retaliation against Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods, citing illegal immigration and drug smuggling as justification. \The escalating tensions between the neighboring countries erupted after the White House announced Trump's intention to impose 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods.

Sheinbaum instructed her economy minister, Marcelo Ebrard, to activate 'Plan B,' a strategy that includes both tariff and non-tariff measures to safeguard Mexico's interests. Ebrard characterized Trump's tariffs as a 'flagrant violation' of the free trade agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. \ Sheinbaum also responded fiercely to Washington's claim of an 'intolerable alliance' between her government and drug trafficking groups. On social media, she categorically refuted the White House's slander, stating, 'If there is such an alliance anywhere, it is in the U.S. gun shops that sell high-powered weapons to these criminal groups.' Sheinbaum further urged the United States to address the fentanyl crisis within its borders by tackling the sale of narcotics on its streets and curbing money laundering activities stemming from illegal drug trade. Although U.S. politicians and analysts have previously alleged Mexican government collaboration with cartels, this marks the first instance of a formal accusation, according to retired Mexican diplomat Agustin Gutierrez Canet. He emphasized the unprecedented nature of the U.S. government's move to directly link the Mexican government to drug trafficking in an official document. While acknowledging Trump's use of rhetoric to exert pressure, Canet cautioned against dismissing it lightly. \Experts predict that the tariffs imposed by Mexico's largest trade partner will inflict a significant blow to Latin America's second-largest economy. Last year, the United States absorbed over 80% of Mexico's exports. With exports to the U.S. constituting approximately 20% of Mexico's GDP, these tariffs could potentially drive both the Canadian and Mexican economies into recession later this year, according to Capital Economics. Consumers may face higher prices for fruits, vegetables, nuts and other Mexican imports, including avocados. In 2023, the U.S. imported over $45 billion in agricultural products from Mexico, including fresh strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, and beef, as stated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mexico also exports beer, tequila, and other beverages to the U.S. A 25% tariff could lead to a 12% decline in Mexican exports, according to Gabriela Siller, head of economic analysis at Banco BASE. She warns that Mexico's GDP 'could fall by four percent in 2025, if the tariff remains in place all year.' Siller adds, 'By the end of 2024, Mexico was on the verge of a recession. If this tariff lasts for several months, the Mexican economy will fall into a severe recession.'
