Mexican authorities uncovered a small narco-camp on an island from which gunmen suspected of being part of the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas opened fire on U.S. Border Patrol agents. The discovery came after a raid by Mexican state police on Tuesday. Officers from the Tamaulipas State Guard secured access to the island situated on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, the location from which the gunmen had launched their attack the previous day.
On Monday, a group of at least four armed individuals, believed to be affiliated with the Cartel Del Noreste, a faction of Los Zetas, fired upon U.S. Border Patrol agents who were attempting to intercept a group of migrants who had recently crossed the Rio Grande. The shooting resulted in a tense standoff. At least four gunmen remained on the island, while Mexican authorities positioned themselves south of the island and U.S. authorities took up positions north of it. Ultimately, authorities on both sides of the border departed on Monday night without making any arrests. During the police raid on the island, Tamaulipas police officers discovered various tents, bags containing ammunition magazines, and other items. This area is used by cartel gunmen as a staging ground for human and drug smuggling operations into Texas. Breitbart Texas was able to obtain exclusive access to the island where the raid took place.
