Mexican authorities discovered a small narcotics camp on an island used by gunmen affiliated with Los Zetas to fire on U.S. Border Patrol agents. The shooting prompted a tense standoff on Monday before authorities on both sides of the border eventually withdrew.

Mexican authorities uncovered a small narcotics camp on an island that was used by gunmen affiliated with the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas to fire on U.S. Border Patrol agents. The discovery followed a raid by Mexican state police forces on the island, located on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, a day after the shooting incident. \Tuesday's raid saw officers from the Tamaulipas State Guard make their way onto the island.

This was the same location from which, on Monday, a group of at least four gunmen opened fire on U.S. Border Patrol agents who were attempting to intercept a group of migrants who had recently crossed the river. The shooting resulted in a tense standoff, with at least four gunmen remaining on the island while Mexican authorities positioned themselves south and U.S. authorities across the border to the north. Eventually, authorities on both sides of the border withdrew on Monday night without making any arrests. \During the police raid, Tamaulipas police discovered various tents, bags containing ammunition magazines, and other items indicative of a narcotics camp. The area serves as a staging ground for cartel-controlled human and drug trafficking operations into Texas. This discovery highlights the ongoing threat posed by criminal organizations operating along the U.S.-Mexico border
