A Mexican man, Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, died in St. Augustine, Florida, after being struck by a tractor trailer while attempting to evade U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
Coronilla Durán, a 28-year-old from San Luis de la Paz, Guanajuato, Mexico, was in the U.S. on a tourist visa, visiting family and friends. He had been in the country for only a short time before the fatal incident occurred on July 14, 2026. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Coronilla Durán was one of four people who fled on foot from ICE and Homeland Security Investigations agents during a gas station encounter.
He darted across a busy road and into the path of the semi. Coronilla Durán's widow, Yezzika Alamilla, has been assisted by Colectivo Arbol, a farmworkers advocacy group, to travel from Mexico and repatriate her husband's remains. The Mexican consulate has also provided assistance. Coronilla Durán will be buried in his hometown, leaving behind a 7-month-old daughter and a 7-year-old son
