Despite intense pressure from the U.S. government to eradicate them, the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas released a video claiming they are not targeting civilians. The statement comes after a series of violent clashes with the Mexican military and the arrest of a regional commander.

One of Mexico's most violent criminal organizations, linked to thousands of forced abductions, released a video this week claiming they are not targeting civilians and urging the community to continue their daily lives. This statement comes amid intense pressure from the U.S. government to not only designate hyperviolent cartels as terrorist groups but to eradicate them.

The video, released by the Cartel Del Noreste (CDN) faction of Los Zetas, features a masked gunman standing in front of the camera, flanked by several other armed men. He delivers a message in Spanish asserting that the criminal organization is not targeting civilians and denies any involvement in threats against U.S. or Mexican federal forces. The video's release follows a series of intense gunbattles between CDN-Los Zetas gunmen and the Mexican military in the streets of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. While only four gunmen were killed in the clashes, the sheer scale of the shootouts caused widespread panic, prompting city officials to ask residents to stay indoors until the violence subsided. These confrontations were linked to the arrest of regional commander Ricardo Gonzalez Sauceda, known as Mando R or Ricky. On Monday, Mexico's top security chief, Omar Garcia Harfuch, announced Sauceda's arrest, claiming he was at the top of the CDN-Los Zetas leadership, though he is only a regional commander. The arrest triggered numerous social media warnings circulating in Nuevo Laredo, alleging the city would be placed under curfew as CDN-Los Zetas planned attacks against Mexico's military and targeted both U.S. and Mexican federal officials. The arrest of Mando R occurred shortly after a phone call between U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding the postponement of punitive tariffs against Mexico for its alleged failure to adequately curb drug cartels and human smuggling. The CDN faction of Los Zetas has been implicated in numerous cases of forced disappearances and mass killings in the areas under its control
