New York Mets right-hander Kodai Senga is expected to begin throwing within one week after tests revealed inflammation in his right shoulder has cleared. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza says an MRI on Senga’s shoulder was “very, very encouraging.” Senga was shut down last month after he reported discomfort in the shoulder.

FILE - New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga smiles during a spring training baseball workout Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024, in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Senga is expected to begin throwing within one week after tests revealed inflammation in his right shoulder has cleared. Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider throws in the first inning of a spring training baseball game against the Detroit Tigers in North Port, Fla., Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

If LeMahieu is sidelined to start the season, Boone said Alex Verdugo would move into the leadoff spot against right-handers and Gleyber Torres will be an option against left-handers. Oswaldo Cabrera could fill in at third. The forecast for heavy rain on Friday led the Braves on Thursday to push back Strider’s final spring training start one day to Saturday against Tampa Bay.
