The New York Mets have re-signed pitcher Drew Smith, who underwent his second Tommy John surgery last year. Manager Carlos Mendoza expressed his excitement about Smith's return and highlighted his contributions to the team.
As reporters gathered around the conference room at Clover Park, news broke that the Mets had agreed to bring back right-hander Drew Smith . Manager Carlos Mendoza, who was taking questions from reporters at the time, couldn't confirm the news, but he did offer some words regarding what Smith means to the team. 'Great guy, you know, and he's the guy that, when healthy, takes the ball,' Mendoza said.
'It's sad that he went down the way he went down (last year), but it means a lot to the guys in the locker room. 'So, yeah, again, this is a guy that takes the baseball, gives you multiple innings, gives you high leverage innings. It doesn't matter. He's a gamer.' Smith's had his second Tommy John surgery last July. At the time, the possibility of his Mets' career being over was a real possibility. 'I've been with the Mets for a long time and I love this organization, they've done a lot for me,' Smith said. 'Obviously, going into free agency, it's a tough time for this to happen. It's never a good time for it to happen, but this really stings.' Smith has appeared in 191 games in his six-year career with the Mets and has a 3.48 ERA with 202 strikeouts in 196 1/3 innings.
