The New York Mets were reportedly intrigued enough by this journeyman to pick him up just as spring training was getting underway.
As the New York Mets look to reconstruct a pitching staff that crumbled down the stretch last year, they appear to be taking a curious minor league flier. Bryce Conley is 31 years old and has never thrown a pitch in Major League Baseball.
He had an ERA just over 5.00 in 118 1/3 innings in the upper levels of the Washington Nationals organization last year. But something about his profile evidently caught the Mets' eye.Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets and Conley agreed to a minor-league contract for the upcoming season. It will be the right-hander's eighth season in affiliated ball after he garnered a 22nd-round draft selection from the Athletics in 2017.Conley's strikeout and walk numbers aren't particularly impressive throughout his many years in the minors, but he has allowed just 428 hits in 491 minor-league innings. His professional journey also includes two brief stints in Mexico where he's posted a 2.73 ERA in 29 2/3 innings. One potential benefit for the Mets here is that Conley is stretched out as a starter, so he could theoretically play a long-relief role and/or make a random spot start at some point during the season if the schedule gets hectic. And at this point in his career, there's no inglorious way for Conley to make his major league debut if offered. Conley might not be the biggest name joining the Mets' pitching staff in Port St. Lucie, but he'll have his chances to impress in games, especially as some of his major and minor-league teammates head to the World Baseball Classic next month.
