The Metro Richmond Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a newborn pygmy hippo, born just before the holidays. The baby hippo is the third calf for parents Iris and Corwin.

A baby pygmy hippo was born on December 9, 2024, at the Metro Richmond Zoo in Virginia. The newborn arrived after a seven-month gestation. This is the third calf for parents Iris and Corwin in 4.5 years, and the second born just before the holidays. The baby hippo was born in the indoor pool while Iris was laboring. This gives mom and baby privacy to bond. The baby hippo weighed 15 pounds at 5 days old. Fully grown pygmy hippo s can weigh up to 600 pounds.
