The eThekwini Municipality in Durban is haemorrhaging cash, and five municipal departments has spent a whopping R3.6 billion on overtime pay in five years, including on employees who don't qualify for it, which is in contravention of labour laws.

A series of reports on overtime expenditure patterns and a forensic report obtained by News24 shows that the electricity, water, sanitation and solid waste departments respectively spent R1 billion, R731 million, R470 million and R783 million on overtime pay in the five years to 2022.Read this for free
