A study investigated the effects of methylphenidate on driving performance in healthy individuals without ADHD. Results indicate that the stimulant improved driving performance, particularly in terms of lane weaving and speed consistency.
Many individuals use methylphenidate without a prescription. In the US alone, 5 million adults misuse prescription stimulants by taking them at higher doses, longer durations, or simply without a prescription. This study examined the impact of methylphenidate on driving performance in 25 mentally and physically healthy drivers without ADHD . Participants took either methylphenidate or a placebo 85 minutes before using a driving simulator.
Their driving performance, including lane weaving and speed variation, was monitored. Results showed that methylphenidate significantly improved driving performance, reducing lane weaving and speed variation, especially in the later stages of the drive. While fixation duration decreased, other eye movement metrics remained unchanged
