A methane gas explosion at an under-construction hydropower tunnel in India's Sikkim state has killed at least 12 workers. Rescue teams are struggling with toxic gas and flooding in the seismically active Himalayan region where the project is located.

A powerful methane gas explosion tore through an under-construction tunnel at the 500-megawatt Teesta Hydroelectric Project in the Himalayan state of Sikkim, India, on Monday, July 20, 2026.

The blast occurred at the hydropower site located in Samardung village, approximately 40 kilometers south of the state capital, Gangtok. Rescue operations faced immediate challenges due to the accumulation of lethal methane gas and flooding within the tunnel. Authorities have confirmed the recovery of 12 worker bodies from the disaster site, with many more feared trapped. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force, utilized specialized breathing apparatus and night-vision equipment to navigate the hazardous conditions.

Administrative official Anupama Tamling reported that the rescue effort was severely hampered by the dangerous gas buildup and water infiltration. The Teesta River basin is a seismically active region characterized by young, fragile mountain rock formations. These geological conditions, riddled with fractures and underground cavities, are prone to trapping ancient gases like methane, making large-scale tunnel construction exceptionally risky.

Experts warn that the combination of seismic activity, unstable terrain, and unpredictable underground environments significantly heightens the danger for such infrastructure projects in the Himalayas. The incident underscores the precarious balance between developmental ambitions and geological realities in one of the world's most ecologically and geologically sensitive areas.
