Meta Platforms, formerly Facebook, is making changes to its policy team with Joel Kaplan replacing Nick Clegg as President of Global Affairs. The move comes three weeks before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration and signals how tech companies are preparing for a new administration.
Facebook parent Meta is making changes to its policy team just three weeks before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Nick Clegg , the company's global head of policy since 2018, is stepping down. He will be replaced by Joel Kaplan , who was a staffer for former President George W. Bush and appeared with incoming Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and Trump at the NYSE in December. This shakeup comes as tech companies adjust for a new administration in Washington.
Clegg, a former British deputy prime minister, said he is leaving at the start of the new year. Kaplan will take on the title of Chief Global Affairs Officer. Clegg joined Meta in 2018 after a career in British politics with the Liberal Democrats party. He helped Meta navigate intense scrutiny, particularly regarding the company's influence on elections and efforts to control harmful content. Clegg also guided the company through the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which Facebook shared user data with third-party political consultants. He represented the company in both Washington and London, often speaking at panels on artificial intelligence and other tech-related issues. 'My time at the company coincided with a significant resetting of the relationship between 'big tech' and the societal pressures manifested in new laws, institutions and norms affecting the sector,' Clegg wrote
