In sentencing a 19-year-old man for accessing child abuse material on Facebook, NT Supreme Court Justice Jenny Blokland noted 'a number of similar cases before the court recently'.
A Northern Territory Supreme Court judge has called for social media companies to "take some responsibility" for the sharing of child abuse material on their platforms after seeing a number of similar cases.
"Otherwise there may be a whole new category of young people, especially from remote areas, going to jail for this type of offending." Justice Blokland said Mullumbuk's case was one of "a number of similar cases before the court recently" and suggested there was a need for better education, especially in remote communities.
