Learn how to make Meta AI your default digital assistant on your Android device and explore its unique features, including AI-powered photo and video generation, Reels creation, and voice control.
Are you tired of using Gemini or Google Assistant as your default digital assistant on Android ? Looking for a change of pace? If you have the latest Meta AI app installed on your device – version 230.0.0.36.164 or later – we'll show you how a few simple taps can breathe new life into your smartphone. First things first, ensure the Meta AI app is on your device. You can download it from the Google Play Store. Once downloaded, or if you already have it, check your Meta AI app version.
To do this, navigate to Settings >Apps >See all apps. Scroll to Meta AI and tap on its listing to open the App info page. Scroll to the bottom to see your phone's app version. Remember, you need version 230.0.0.36.164 or later for this to work.If your Meta AI app version is compatible, head to Settings >Apps >Default apps >Digital Assistant. This will display a list of available default digital assistant apps. If you have the correct Meta AI version, you'll see it in the list. To try Meta AI, tap the button next to its name until it's filled in. Keep in mind that choosing Meta AI as your default digital assistant means you can't just open the app, start typing, or speak your query. It doesn't support voice input at this time. You might be wondering why you'd choose Meta AI over other assistants like Google Assistant, Gemini, or ChatGPT. Meta AI allows you to use text prompts to generate photos and videos. Leveraging its connection with Meta, it can even create Reels that you can share on Instagram and Facebook or send via WhatsApp – all platforms owned by Meta. Long-pressing your phone's power button will open the app. Alternatively, tap and hold the home button if you use the classic three-button navigation system. With gesture navigation, swipe in from one of the bottom corners to open your default app, which is now Meta AI. After setting Meta AI as your default, you'll receive AI-generated answers to your queries. For timers or alarms, you'll need to open the Clock app on your device. Personally, I prefer having my Pixel set up with Gemini as the default. You can achieve this by opening the Google app and tapping the personal icon in the top right corner. Tap on Settings >Gemini >Digital Assistants from Google and select Gemini. Remember, you still use 'Hey Google' to activate Gemini. Ensure Google is listed as your default digital assistant, as there's no separate option for Gemini. While Gemini excels at answering queries, it can still set alarms or timers if asked via voice input, using Google Assistant to carry out the task.
