❄️ Heavy snow is expected to hit large parts of the UK this weekend after temperatures plunged to -10°C overnight
warned most of Scotland and the north of England down to Stoke-on-Trent will see snow, while Wales and the South East are expected to be icy.
In Shetland, engineers were working to restore power to hundreds of homes after a major blackout on Monday. By midday areas of snow had turned to rain, but snow was still expected in higher parts, just north of the Forth-Clyde Valley. Milder, wet and windy weather is expected to follow, however, putting an end to the cold snap but still posing hazards for motorists.
“As the mild air meets the cold air, currently in situ over the UK there will be a transient spell of snow, potentially to low levels, especially in the north. Add to this the risk of rain falling onto frozen surfaces, and strong winds over upland areas of northern Britain, bringing blizzard conditions, and this could be a day to avoid travelling in some areas, although the snow should turn to rain later.”, urged people to check their water pipes and prevent bursts as temperatures rise .
