There could be as much as 40 mm of rainfall in less than an hour

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for Nottinghamshire . The warning will be in place on Sunday, September 1 from 4am until 9pm due to warm and humid air from the southeast possibly causing thunderstorms to develop.

The warning states: "A few showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across parts of southern England on Saturday night, but by Sunday morning there is an increasing risk of more active and organised heavy showers and thunderstorms moving into, or developing across, parts of southern England.

"The risk of storms will then steadily transfer broadly northwards through the afternoon and into the early evening." Although not all of England will experience thunderstorms, Nottinghamshire does fall within the warning area on the map, as does Derbyshire, parts of Lincolnshire and Leicestershire. The Met Office adds: "The extent of these thunderstorms is very uncertain, and many places will miss them, but where they do occur, 30 to 40 mm of rain may fall in less than an hour with perhaps over 75 mm in one or two places, leading to a chance of flooding and disruption."

In the south of England, there is a possibility of frequent lightning strikes and hail. The Met Office warns that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, and that there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to public transport services.
