The warning will be in place until 10am on Thursday, January 2

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for ice across the East Midlands. The yellow warning will be in place from 4pm on Wednesday, January 1 until 10am on Thursday, January 2.

This comes after various weather warnings have already been put in place across the region for heavy rain and strong winds. The government body has warned that icy surfaces could lead to some difficult travel conditions. People should be careful when travelling and watch out for icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. The weather warning is in place for large parts of the UK, including Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Derby, Derbyshire and Leicestershire in the East Midlands.

The Met Office warns: "A band of rain, sleet and hill snow will clear southwards during Wednesday afternoon and evening. As skies clear in its wake, and with standing water following earlier rain in places, ice is likely to form quite quickly on untreated surfaces, leading to difficult travel conditions.

"Wintry showers are also likely along some north-facing coasts overnight, increasing the chance of ice in places." People are urged to give themselves at least an extra five minutes when travelling today as not needing to rush reduces the risk of accidents, slips and falls.
