The Met Office has sounded a 'danger to life' alarm as the UK braces itself for Storm Bert's onslaught, warning of possible heavy rain, flash floods and mayhem on the roads.
It goes on to caution: "Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads. Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses. Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings. Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life. Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible.
The forecaster underscored the importance of being prepared, as they added: "Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit." Chaos was reported over the weekend with thousands of homes going dark as vigorous winds led to downed power lines. Northern Powergrid disclosed that 27,000 customers were impacted across the North East, Yorkshire, and northern Lincolnshire.
