A Mesa County resident died Sunday after a shootout with Grand Junction police officers who responded to reports of an assault. The suspect refused to leave the residence and fired at officers, prompting a return of fire and a subsequent SWAT team deployment.

A Mesa County resident died Sunday following a shootout with Grand Junction police officers who were responding to reports of an assault. Around 7:11 p.m. on Sunday, police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of 28 Road in Grand Junction after a neighbor transported the assault victim to the emergency room with life-threatening injuries. Hospital staff then contacted police to report the assault.

Upon arrival at the 400 block of 28 Road, the suspect refused to exit the residence and fired multiple shots at the officers. One Grand Junction police officer returned fire. Following the exchange of gunfire, officers called in SWAT teams from both the Grand Junction Police Department and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators attempted to communicate with the suspect for several hours but received no response. As of Monday morning, no information regarding the suspect's age, gender, or identity was released, but authorities stated that the Mesa County Coroner’s Office will handle the identification process.The incident is currently under investigation by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, and the officer involved in the shooting is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
