Diamondbacks-Cardinals pitching matchups for Monday's series opener at Chase Field
Right-hander Merrill Kelly is expected to be reinstated from the injured list to start on Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals, marking the long-awaited return for one of the Diamondbacks’ better starting pitchers.
Kelly had a 3.22 ERA through 16 starts prior to the injury. He and right-hander Zac Gallen had given the Diamondbacks a formidable 1-2 combo at the top of the rotation, which the club had leaned on heavily due to inconsistency throughout the rotation. “I know you guys consistently asked me about why he wasn’t playing,” Lovullo said. “I don’t like to come up here and mislead you guys, but he was available to me, and I just didn’t want to give a competitive advantage or disadvantage in any way to us or the opposition. He was banged up. I was trying to rest him.”
Jameson has been diagnosed with an ulnar collateral ligament sprain, Lovullo said. Presumably there was not across-the-board consensus on how to proceed from the three doctors whose opinions Jameson sought.
