U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland criticized Judge Aileen Cannon's dismissal of former President Donald Trump's classified documents case.Garland on Tuesday rejected Cannon's claim that he had wrongly appointed Jack Smith as a special counsel to prosecutor Trump's federal cases.'For more than 20 years, I was a federal judge,' Garland told NBC News. 'Do I look like somebody who would make that basic mistake about the law? I don't think so.

Trump was facing 40 federal charges in Cannon's court over his alleged handling of sensitive materials seized from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, after leaving the White House in January 2021. He was also accused of obstructing efforts by federal authorities to retrieve them. The Republican presidential nominee had pleaded not guilty and has said the case is part of a political witch hunt.
