PETALING JAYA: Mercy Malaysia has launched a “Ramadan Appeal 2020” fund for communities and families affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

The humanitarian aid body said funds raised would be used to purchase food parcels, enough to feed a family of four, for“Since the movement control order began, we have started receiving requests for food aid from families who live on daily wages, been told to go on no-pay leave or been outrightly terminated. With the MCO being further extended, far more people will be affected, ” said Mercy Malaysia executive director Amran Mahzan in a statement on Friday .

He said that the public could channel any “direct and indirect savings to a good cause during the month of Ramadan” through donations that would help those hit hardest by the MCO and had lost their source of income. “In a survey conducted by the Statistics Department, 46.6% of self-employed respondents had reported losing their jobs due to Covid-19 and MCO enforcement, with the agricultural and service sectors recording the highest percentage of job losses”, he said.or contact the Malaysian Medical Relief Society for more details.
