Flagship sports car loses four cylinders and 120kg; cracks 62mph in 4.6sec
Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the entry-level version of the GT, dubbed the GT 43, which is said to offer greater agility than its V8-engined, four-wheel-drive sibling. It swaps the GT 63’s snarling 577bhp 4.0-litre V8 for the mild-hybrid 2.0-litre four-pot from the A45 AMG, which puts out 421bhp and 369lb ft. Like in the GT 63, power is transmitted through Mercedes’s nine-speed automatic; but only through the rear wheels, rather than all four.
As such, Mercedes is positioning the 43 as the most agile car in the GT line-up, with AMG CEO Michael Scheibe promising it “will put a smile on your face on winding roads”. Rear-wheel steering, which activates at speeds up to 62mph to aid cornering, is also available as an optional extra. Mechanically, the GT 43 is otherwise identical to its thrustier siblings, with the same five-link front and rear suspension set-up that pairs traditional steel springs with adaptive twin-valve dampers.
