COVID-19 is impacting the mental health of people across the world. While physical centers for intervention are closed, tech nonprofits Crisis Text Line, Empower Work, and Real Talk are providing digital alternatives for mental health support.
, the text hotline for workplace issues, has seen a 3x increase in message volume. Its average conversation length has increased, and the content of these conversations has expanded beyond workplace issues. “Increasing financial distress and concern related to family health and security are complicating what were already very challenging conversations,” says Founder and Executive Director Jaime-Alexis Fowler.
A story shared by Fowler brings these complexities to life. One Empower Work user, a mother caring for young children and her immunocompromised parents, was forbidden from working from home by her boss. She texted Empower Work, overwhelmed by fear of bringing the virus home but unable to quit her job. “At the heart is the work issue,” says Fowler, “and combined with these additional health and financial concerns, it’s emotionally taxing.”...
