NEW YORK — He repeatedly couldn’t recall events. He conceded filing fraudulent documents with a government agency and a pandemic recovery program. And when an attorney for Sen. Bob Menendez hammered chief prosecution witness Jose Uribe about his past crimes, he admitted to a long trail of lies.
Uribe, 57, pleaded guilty more than a decade ago in a New Jersey state court to insurance fraud and theft by deception. This year he pleaded guilty to seven federal charges, including a conspiracy to bribe Menendez, wire fraud and obstruction of justice, as well as a tax evasion count unrelated to the lawmaker’s case.
Uribe also said he filed fraudulent documents with the Small Business Administration and a federal disaster recovery program meant to help businesses stay afloat during the economic ravages of the“When your family is in trouble, there’s nothing you wouldn’t say to protect them,” the attorney said.Uribe had testified Monday that Menendez was well aware of the corrupt agreement he had reached with Arslanian and that the senator actively participated in the scheme.
